Cape Epic 2016 – Stage 1 and 2

Stage 1 of the Cape Epic 2016 was held in Saronsberg, Tulbagh. The town is nestled in a beautiful, lush valley surrounded by mountains. Over its 300 years Tulbagh has built a reputation for excellent wine.

Now the town is beginning to earn a name for great mountain biking. All riders were highly motivated to win, as stage 1 traditionally gives a clearer idea of what’s to come. The athletes had to ascend 2300m over 108km, a lot of it on rugged and rocky terrain.

It was Karl Platt (GER) and his team-fellow Urs Huber (SUI) who also won stage 1 after success at the prologue. Alban Lakata (AUT) and Kristian Hynek (CZE) took the second place in front of Periklis Ilias (GRE) and Tiago Jorge Ferreira Oliveira (POR).

Stage 2 was a memorable one for more than just its place in history as it was the 100th stage in the 13 year existence of the Cape Epic. Directly east of Tulbagh lies an old wagon trail over the Witzenberg mountain range.

On Stage 2 riders had to traverse it twice – going up the steep side with portage sections on the way into the Witzenberg Valley and then on the way back as they had to descend into Tulbagh towards the finish.

In-between those testing bits of trail they experienced the unique geology of the Witzenberg Valley as they looped through its distinctive sandstone formations on trails carved out by local farmers and mountain bikers.
