Say hello to your 2009 Dew Tour BMX Park overall champion, Mr. Garrett Reynolds!
To call the final in Orlando dramatic is like saying Garrett’s having an OK year – a gross understatement. Garrett came into Park final as the overall points leader, but with the likes of Dave Mirra and Daniel Dhers nipping at his heels anything was possible. And indeed it looked like anyone’s game after the first run, with both Mirra and Garrett crashing and Daniel stomping his way into the lead.
It all came down to the final round, and with Dhers failing to improve upon his first run the stage was set for a showdown between Mirra and Garrett – legend vs. upstart, old-guard vs. newschool. And the Miracle Man did his thing hammering a bunny hop backflip off the wall ride to put the pressure squarely on Garrett’s shoulders. But the young man rose to the challenge, putting together a flowing run that linked technical wizardry throughout. However, with one bobble at the end the deal was anything but sealed. Garrett dropped to the floor after his run to await his fate – 7th place. Not his best performance, but good enough to hold off Mirra and Dhers. Hey, sometimes you lose the fight but win the war, and Garrett definitely won the war.
Garrett was mobbed by friends and family as the commentators announced him the winner of the 2009 Dew Tour Park Cup!
For his efforts, Garrett walked away with the Dew Cup and a watch the size of a Cadillac. That’s what you get when you’re 19 and one of the best riders in the world. Young, gifted and paid – it definitely does not suck to be Garrett Reynolds!
