Maurizio Coluccio and Catalunia Team winners at Alta Via Stage Race

Head-to-head battles on the edge of no more than a minute have been fought on the trails of Alta Via dei Monti Liguri, where breathtaking scenery and warm Ligurian-style welcome have been the perfect backdrop for a fantastic and exciting adventure in the saddle.

The fifth edition of the Alta Via Stage Race wraps up with the win of Maurizio Coluccio (BrikBike Team) from Torino, who rides the eight stages over a time of 31h and 51 minutes.

The Solo category has been a very tough battle during this 2016 edition, with at least four riders from four different countries within a gap of just one hour. Behind Maurizio, Adell Sabatè Juanjo (Club Ciclista Catalunya Sud Team) from Catalonia, follows with a time of 33h and 16 minutes, while Pascal Guntensperger (Promotion Tools Team) from Switzerland is third with 33h and 54 minutes. Germany’s Carsten Loeser is fourth, at a tight 2 minutes from Pascal after 500 km and almost 19.000m of elevation gain.

By contrast with the previous year, during this edition the riders have enjoyed good weather and summer temperatures, except during the thunderstorm with hail which caught them on top of Aione Mountain and which has been the cause of an early end for Stage 2. The good weather has given to one hundred participants – across the different formats Hero, Weekend and One Day – the chance of enjoying wonderful views from the viewpoints along the trails of Alta Via dei Monti Liguri and relaxing during the well-earned afternoon rest in a glorious sunshine in the tent camps built up for the overnight stops in Bolano, Sesta Godano, Rezzoaglio, Livellato, Sassello, Rifugio Pian dei Corsi, Rifugio Pian dell’Arma, Pigna and Airole.

In the Couples category the win goes to the Catalunia Team with Miquel Prat Triadu and Joan Pinart who finished the race with a time of 35h and 58 minutes, Green Valley’s Paul Mayr and Tomas Steger from Alto Adige are second with 38h and 22 minutes, while Marco Ciolli and Fabrizio Pampaloni from Tuscany closes in third, with a pedalling time of 42h and 44 minutes.

The organising association LiguriAVventura thanks all partners, the association Ospitalità Alta Via, all services, housing facilities and people that have worked together at this edition.
