The Next Big Thing! THE HYSTERIA

What did you do in the last six months?
Last 6 months were very busy and intensive for The Hysteria and looked more like a race with limited time. We were signed by Memorial Records, released our new EP Trojan Horse, released new music video for the track Black Cat Wailing At The Moon from this new EP, played a couple of shows, including support Veil of Maya and Iwrestledabearonce. Also, this spring we had the largest tour in the history of our band where we were a headliner. I think it’s quite good results for the half of the year. And now we’re closely engaged in writing the brand new material.

What have you got in your wallet now?
This is a very complicated question. Instruments, equipment, recordings, music-videos and so on – each of them costs money and it’s clear for everyone. Many things we try to do by ourselves, something we get from our friends, and great thanks them for this help and support. For example, our latest playthrough-video (on the track Black Cat Wailing At The Moon) was made by our close friend Oleg, and he made it for free, for the idea and ‘cuz the love of the band. But otherwise it’s clear that while we are going to the achievement of our goal there will be considerable costs, in any case. But, I think it is better to spend money on a labor of love than on the endless partying and alcohol.

Why have you chosen this name for your band?
Looking at the root, the “hysteria” means – a psychological disorder that characterized by regular mood swings. I think it fully conveys what our band makes on stage and what we put into our music.

How important is the look/appearance for your band?
Until recently, we hadn’t paid enough attention to this aspect, it’s always more important for us person’s internal world and views than just appearance… But there is a true russian proverb: “a good dress is a card of invitation, a good mind is a letter of recommendation”. And the meaning of this proverb is really deep. Nowedays your band need to enjoy the fans’ tastes, not only from a musical point of view, but from a visual one, ‘cuz the gigs are attended not only by guys who heard your stuff before, but ones who have never heard and seen you before, and hardly anyone would like to listen your band if you look “common”, so now we understand all the importance of this aspect of band image. It should become an integral part of the band’s policy, as well as its’ sound and ideas in constructing songs and so on.

Tell me about the new EP Trojan Horse. Are you fully satisfied with it?
Yep, we are satisfied with this release by 100%. It completely fulfill the objective which was entrusted to it, i.e. it helped us to find a new audience and gave us the possibility to reach the european level, and also to change the opinion about the quality of our records. Actually this release is something completely different from everything we’ve done before. Recording was quite more difficult than all the previous releases in sum. We should have done something radically different from what we’d done before, we had a deadline and, considering the tight concert schedule, it was almost impossible. But we did it and our audience will judge – how successful.

Which is the highest point of the EP?
Personally for me these are Porn Star and Trojan Horse. I think these tracks are very different from what we’ve done before, and they represent the development of the band’s way, the progress of us as musicians and as a band.

…And the lowest point?
I think it’s Revolution In Our Hearts, Revolution In Your Hands. This song is difficult perceived by listeners and slightly out of the general ‘concepts’, but… It’s nice track in any case!

How would you define your sound?
Our sound is an endless agony and constant flushing of positive and negative emotions that intertwined into one ball. 22.09.13 It sounds like a joke, but everyone who listened The Hysteria at least once, could prove this statement. We try not to do an ordinary songs or something looks the number of sounds to fullfil the space of album timing. Every track is being thought to detail and we spend a lot of time trying to put the idea in it, trying to create a “story”, a logical story with a beginning, development and ending. We do this not only in the lyrics but also in music, emphasizing the contrast and passing our mood. Yes, the agony – this is the best definition for music of The Hysteria.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?
It’s utopia! Nowadays the majority of people are more and more dependent from social opinion and more rarely think with their own head. It’d be great if people started to form their own opinion, relying on their own experience and thoughts. And everyone should become kinder to each other, realising the common ideas and aims. And I am talking not only about music, but about all the spheres of living that must be rethought, I think. Together we much more stronger, and this fact become unknown for many of us. In general, I think that this is impossible, unfortunately, ‘cuz people are rotten and this is also – the fact. Instead of human values that we are planted since childhood, greed and selfishness take place.

Tell me some of the bands you admire.
I love The Dillinger Escape Plan very much. Because of this particular band The Hysteria was created one day, also because of them I was motivated to continue doing what I started to do one day. Also we got great influence and inspiration from The Chariot, and Thank goodness, that The Hysteria had a chance to share the stage with these guys (today, as you may know – this opportunity isn’t available any more). Owing to them we rethought our position and views on what we do on stage, on our perfomance and show. There should be no falsehood, no productions or disgusting crab’s squattings to the floor, only sincerity and honesty – the listener will always appreciates it. The other band of my love is Rinoa. They gave me that particular sad mood, true and sincere one and I think as at them – every of our songs should have its’ own atmosphere.

What song is in your head right now?
One Of Us Is The Killer by The Dillinger Escape Plan. This song have been in my playlist for a week already.

Name 3 words that describe your band.
Chaos – it’s about both our music and our live-shows. Tenacity – it’s about us too. I think if there were not this quality we would have gave up music and our dreams long time ago. Pain – this is what our music carry in itself. Maybe it sounds crazy, but it’s true, ‘cuz our goal to reach the soul through the human vices, to reach the consciousness of each and feelings of anyone who had not forgotten how to think and feel.

Which are the best and the worst qualities of your band?
The worst is that we do not judge of character, so that we often come up changes of the membership of the band. It’s really shitty situation, and we are very tired of this changes inside the band, ‘cuz each oif these changes takes a lot of time, strength and causes a lot of bickering. The best is that we have never try to do anything “fashionable”. Perhaps we were able to carry the original idea of the first release of The Hysteria since 2009 to the present days, and it’s awesome I suppose! We nurtured the band as something like our own child, with its own manner and its positive and negative sides. This is great!

And of your local music scene?
The local scene is almost dead today. Just rumors and quarrels everywhere. I’d like to believe that it’s a matter of time, but today the situation is absolutely like that. If take the CIS’s scene, I can admit that there appeared quite interesting and serious bands, with their own character – and it’s good signs. – What is the most embarrassing situation you’ve ever been with The Hysteria? – Oh yeah, there was such situation. It was our show with The Chariot in Ukraine. Our vocalist concealed from us that he couldn’t cross the border of our country, and he wasn’t missed on the boarder of Belarus and Ukraine. As a result we played our full instrumental set. Today it’s hard for me to judge was it bad or not, but there was a big resonance from our haters. We “disgraced ourselves”, based on their words. But I think we came out of this situation with her head held high. We have a strong instrumental part, we made good use of it.

Have you got a good reason to be in Behind Magazine?
Yep, I think we have one to be in Behind Magazine. Globally we haven’t done anything great, but taking a deep analysis – our band can be a good example of making right goals and taking steps of its achievement, despite all the problems that can be even imagine. We have never tried to play anything “fashionable”, just trying to do anything to be in the limelight. In other words from the very beginning we do what WE want do. Besides, I think that not every day your readers can communicate with the guys from the country of “bears, vodka and samovar”, well and in turn – we try to share the most interesting information about us and our motherland.

Have you got something to add?
First of all I’d like to thank you for this interview. It were interesting and volumetric questions, and I hope I and we didn’t dissappoint you. For those who are reading this interview right now, I’d like to say – meet you soon in Italy! If anybody keep in touch with the news from The Hysteria, you should know that we are working on our European tour, and this fall/winter we will destroy everything alive in your area (not only figurally saying). Listen our Trojan Horse and wait for us in your town.
